NEMIC Signs MOU with Australian MedTech Company; Part of Broader Plan to Solidify RI as Global MedTech Hub

An Australian delegation — headed by Hon. Stephen Dawson, Western Australia’s Minister for Emergency Services; Innovation and Digital Economy; Science; and Medical Research — joined Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, and local industry leaders earlier this month to celebrate NEMIC’s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Perth BioDesign.

The March 4 event at the CIC Building in Providence’s Innovation & Design District was the culmination of weeks of collaboration during Q1 2024 between NEMIC and the Australian delegation.

With the goal of creating a reciprocal MedTech Hub, the MOU formalizes the shared commitment to work together on joint initiatives and serves as a blueprint for future collaboration, guiding the efforts of both organizations. It will help provide MedTech companies in both Rhode Island and in Western Australia with access to an established ecosystem, complete with Key Opinion Leaders, Subject Matter Experts, and an educated labor pool.

“Looking ahead, this partnership holds great promise ushering in a new era of healthcare innovation, and for driving meaningful impact for Perth & Providence, and beyond,” said NEMIC Executive Director Maey Petrie.

Perth Biodesign is an organization that provides educational training in healthcare innovation that focuses on identifying unmet clinical needs, inventing solutions that address these needs, and creating implementation strategies that fit within the complex healthcare landscape.  This objective combined with NEMIC’s mission to transform healthcare through innovation provides a synergistic pairing that is well-suited for improving health outcomes worldwide.

The signing ceremony was part of a broader visit to Providence in which the Australian delegation explored ways to create a pipeline between Providence and Western Australia that will foster economic growth, job creation, and labor up-skilling.
