Curveball Pitch Night

On May 28th, 2020, NEMIC held its first Curveball Pitch Night and first virtual pitch event with 3 startups pitching and 12 investors in attendance. Curveball at NEMIC is a play on and similar to their Softball Pitch Events.

Softball at NEMIC is a “soft” pitch event for startups, who are still in the development stage, to practice pitching to real investors to learn through investor feedback to hone their pitches, their decks, and their business development strategies. One of NEMIC’s goals is to help CEOs and startups continuously learn how to better themselves as a startup CEO, better their pitches for investment, and better their business for successful commercialization. Through NEMIC’s Softball Events, they can fulfill that goal with the support of real investors who are working and involved in the current industry. You can read more about past Softball events here.

Curveball at NEMIC is a pitch event for startups who are actively fundraising. During Curveball, startups receive 15 minutes for their pitch presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A from investors. Through this event, NEMIC looks to facilitate connections and relationships between the pitching startups and investors. The goal is to have the investors continue the conversation around investment with one or multiple of the startups who pitched.

Last week, NEMIC achieved that goal during the inaugural Curveball Pitch Night. 3 Rhode Island-based startups pitched to 12 investors, representing angel, venture and private funds/groups. Curveball sparked interest from 5 investment groups to continue conversations with the startups. NEMIC looks forward to learning how these relationships pan out and hope that the startups are invited to pitch to the groups in representation.

SafeTap

Meningitis is a serious infection of the fluid surrounding the brain. Delay in the diagnosis of meningitis can lead to brain damage, deafness, cerebral palsy, and death. To tests for meningitis, a lumbar puncture (LP) must be completed, however around 25% of taps are unsuccessful or contaminated with blood due to the difficulty and position dependency of the procedure. SafeTaps device for infant stabilization could significantly improve success rates for this procedure, thereby improving care of infants, decreasing pain associated with the procedure, and reducing costs to the medical system.
