Rhode Island Business Competition Names Winners –Med Tech Track Finalists Awarded by NEMIC with support from Rhode Island Commerce

Providence, RI - May 13, 2020 – The Rhode Island Business Competition announced the winners of the 2020 competition last night in an online awards ceremony.  This year, the New England Medical Innovation Center (NEMIC) partnered with the Rhode Island Business Competition to manage the Med Tech Track of the competition with the support of Rhode Island Commerce.

Winning the Med Tech Track was ResusciTech, co-founded by Abigail Kohler and Gregory Fine, both recent Brown University graduates studying biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering. ResusciTech has developed a novel CPR feedback device that will give people the ability to perform CPR accurately with real-time feedback to increase survival rates of victims of cardiac arrests.   ResusciTech received prizes of $10,000 in cash sponsored by Rhode Island Commerce, 20 hours of in-kind mentoring sessions by NEMIC, plus $32,525 in professional and consulting services from sponsorships of the Rhode Island Business Competition.  

The two Med Tech Track finalists each received $2,500 in cash prizes sponsored by Rhode Island Commerce, ten hours of mentoring services provided by NEMIC, and $13,275 of in-kind services.

bosWell is developing a two-sided marketplace that connects health plans and providers to community-based organizations utilizing a free application for client management which links individuals at CBO touch points back to care teams.  Principal applicant:  Aristotle Mannan

Synapse Dental has developed a low-cost, highly effective device to mitigate dental pain in under 2 minutes for most dental pain issues.  Principal applicant:  Cosmo Haralambidis

In addition to the esteemed panel of Judges for this year’s competition, NEMIC pulled in local industry professionals, Dom Messerli and Jenna Marchal, to judge the preliminary applications for the Med Tech Track.  Both Messerli and Marchal bring deep expertise in regulated medical device development and business knowledge to judge the commercial viability of the Med Tech Track applicants.
