NEMIC's Aidan Petrie Invited to Present at Two High-Profile Conferences

Aidan Petrie was pleased to be invited to participate in two key industry events last month: the 2023 Beahrs Surgical Innovation Summit, in Rochester, MN and the 2023 Northern New England MedTech Conference, in Hannover, NH.

The 2023 Beahrs Surgical Innovation Summit took place on Nov. 8 and 9. Hosted by the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, the annual event is a platform for healthcare professionals, surgeons, and innovators to discuss and explore advancements in surgical innovation. This year’s summit included keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, focusing mainly on addressing challenges in surgery through innovation, exploring emerging technologies, and fostering collaboration among experts in the field. Attendees include an array of industry professionals including surgeons, researchers, innovators, and individuals passionate about driving advancements in surgical care.

This year, the Mayo Clinic invited NEMIC to attend the Innovation Summit as a presenter, to share insights about the entrepreneurial side of the medical industry as it pertains to MedTech and device innovation. Andrew Cleveland, Executive Director of Fogarty Innovation in San Francisco, presented alongside Aidan. The two demonstrated a mock pitch - with Andrew pitching a company and Aidan providing feedback on the presentation from an investor perspective; all within the context of how entrepreneurs and investors align.

Highlights of the conference include Dr. Fredric Moll, founder of Intuitive Surgical and Auris, giving a keynote on the future of robotics in the OR; along with much talk on the best (and worst…) uses of AI.  Said Jessica Richter of the Executive Steering Committee about the Summit, “It’s vitally important to strike the balance of tools & technology, and human delivery of care.  Institutions like Mayo are really being thoughtful about how to deploy technology to enhance the delivery of physician care as opposed to replace.”

A week after the Summit, Aidan hit the road again, attending the 2023 Northern New England MedTech Conference in Hannover, NH at Dartmouth University on Nov. 15 and 16.  Hosted by MedTech Collaborative, the Conference brought together innovators from across the region, fostering conversations about solving the biggest challenges in healthcare. The broad theme of the conference was around building up existing ecosystems, in order to grow and retain companies in Northern New England specifically.

NEMIC was asked to speak at the conference about how its various accelerator programs are run, its successes and strategies from an entrepreneurial perspective, and the general process of fostering technologies to commercialization. The conference had an excellent panel of medtech investors; a competitive pitch event; discussions on public health and AI; and finally an illuminating panel with two supply chain directors on how they evaluate new technologies.

The keynote speaker was Dean Kamen, an engineer, businessman, industry advocate, and serial inventor with an inimitable history of turning unconventional ideas into commercial successes. Kamen, who has been instrumental in the rebirth of Manchester, NH, has helped to build a formidable ecosystem, most recently setting up the ARMI (Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute) facility.

With collaboration and innovation being key to NEMIC’s core mission of transforming healthcare, we were honored to be included by both Mayo Clinic and MedTech Collaborative in each of their November summits. We look forward to what the future holds, and what can be unlocked through the interfacing of key industry components, as we come together to shape what innovation will look like in the coming years.
